What are Bar Screens?

The bar screens made for wastewater treatment plants have evolved into few different forms over the years. But what unites them all is their durability. Today’s modern bar screens are made mostly of stainless steel. And their durable construction is essential to the wastewater treatment operations that depend the removal of large screenings function efficiently. By removing solids, bar screens help downstream processes work efficiently. And they prevent costly maintenance repairs that might otherwise disrupt the facility.

How the Bar Screen Works

Bar screens typically work on a conveyor system. This allows the screen to pick up solids while allowing water to pass through. As solids accumulate on the screen, a rake or many rakes will wipe them off. Multiple rakes can be necessary to keep screenings from accumulating and preventing the flow of influent.

Benefits of Bar Screens

  • Good solution for pump protection or headworks coarse screening
  • Maintenance tends to be accessible from the top channel
  • More positive engagement of rakes into bars than previous versions of bar screens

The Multi-Rake Bar Screen

This type of bar screen uses multiple rakes to clean the grid, which is static. The rakes are attached by a chain mechanism. As with other bar screens, they are exceptional at coarse screenings. That’s something to keep in mind when you hear that multi-rake solutions have a low capture rate. Other benefits include:

  • More positive engagement of the rakes into bars than with previous versions of bar screens
  • Ability to remove debris at a faster rate because it has more than one rake to clear the bars
  • Speed of the rakes can be increased or decreased depending on the operation
